A Different Way To Play Chess
Wizard’s Chess is played on a square board with columns and rows of squares.
The colors of the forty-eight squares, including two side rows or wings of 2x4
squares, alternate between light and dark squares. The chessboard is placed so
that each player has a King and Queen space facing them, with the King on the
right hand side.
The chessboard has four corners that represent the player’s castle. The corners
are designed to protect the King, and can only be occupied by a King or Queen.
This creates a special rule for this game, as a King never moves unless attacked,
and so remains protected until the end behind the castle walls.
Game pieces: Each Player
1 King – 1 Queen – 1 Bishop –
1 Knight –1 Rook – 1 Beast – 4 Pawns
Note: Reverse side of pawns reveals a Queen when promoted.
Special Rules for game play include the following:
The King can only move one space in any direction once under attack in the game,
each King is allowed to make a “Special Attack” move. With this special move the
King can move like any other playing piece, i.e. a Queen, Knight, Bishop, Rook,
Beast, or Pawn while attacking.
The Beast, the only non-traditional chess piece can move three spaces in any
direction, but cannot be moved two turns in a row. Also, the Beast is kept alive
by the pawns. Once a player loses their last pawn, the Beast will have no one to
feed it, and will also die. Once a Beast dies, the token is flipped over revealing
a dungeon.
Only a Queen can access, move to or pass thru this space during play.
See the Black Beast card for Special Rules.
Special Rules: During play, a Queen may land on a Dungeon. While on a Dungeon,
the Queen has the Special Power to summon a beast back to life for one turn, and
can use this beast against an opponent in battle.
Different from regular chess, a pawn can move forward one or two squares each move,
if that square is unoccupied. Also, the far left and right pawns have a special
ability to move left or right into the wing sections to be promoted to Queen.
The two center pawns can only move forward.
